Can Chiropractors Turn Breech Babies?

If you had any idea how often chiropractors get asked if they can turn breech babies, you’d be shocked. As if chiropractors were obstetricians. The external cephalic version (ECV), a procedure done by obstetricians and some midwives, is a medical procedure that numbs the mother’s uterus and manually attempts to turn the fetus from head up to head down while in utero. It is done in a hospital in case something goes wrong and an emergency C-section is warranted.

Completely separate from the medical ECV is the phenomena of reestablishing pelvic balance. This helps to remove tension in pelvic muscles and ligaments and through the restoration of normal biomechanics in the mother, babies optimize their positioning on their own. This is essentially what chiropractic is all about, restoring normal physiological function with gentle spinal adjustments. With no structural or neurological interference, the body has a fascinating ability to correct abnormalities, heal itself, and restore normal function.

Chiropractic and Baby Positioning

When a mother’s spine is realigned to proper position, a symphony of physiological responses happens immediately in response to the uninterrupted communication between the central nervous system and the rest of the body.

Tension inmuscles and ligaments is released and the now balanced pelvis may allow the baby to assume a more optimal position in preparation for birth. More than a dozen articles have been published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health alone that observe and reference this phenomenon in the clinical setting.

The Webster Technique

While chiropractors can’t turn breech babies, what they can do is gently and specifically adjust a mother’s spine and pelvis back into a proper balanced state, reestablishing normal physiological function. In this balanced state, the baby can do what it’s designed to do, find the best possible position for itself for birth.

The Webster technique was developed by Larry Webster, D.C., in 1982. This specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment was designed to restore normal body function. It was observed time and time again that when this technique was used on pregnant women who were carrying breech, their babies turned from breech to head down. (Some babies even turned from posterior to anterior.) Once balance in the mother’s pelvis was restored by this adjustment to her spine, babies sought out their optimal position for birth.

To most people it seemed like chiropractors were “turning breech babies.” After all, before Mom visited the chiropractor, the baby was
breech. After Mom visited the chiropractor, the baby wasn’t breech anymore. Therefore the chiropractor turned the baby, right? Not exactly…

Inside-Out Approach

If chiropractors could turn breech babies, chiropractic would be an “outside-in” approach. Meaning, the doctor would be treating the breech directly. In fact, chiropractic is an “inside-out” approach. Here’s how it’s described by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA): Chiropractic care benefits all aspects of your body’s ability to be healthy. This is accomplished by working with the nervous system—the communication system between your brain and body. Doctors of chiropractic work to correct spinal, pelvic and cranial misalignments. When misaligned, these structures create an imbalance in surrounding muscles and ligaments. Additionally, the resulting nerve system stress may affect the body’s ability to function optimally.

The ICPA also states that the Webster technique:… is a specific assessment and diversified adjustment for all weight bearing individuals and is utilized to enhance neuro-biomechanics in that individual. The ICPA emphasizes that the Webster adjustment is not a treatment for fetal malposition or in-utero constraint. Both breech and in-utero constraint are conditions of the baby, and only obstetric practitioners treat the unborn baby.

Referring to the Webster technique as a “treatment” for breech presentation creates misunderstanding and unnecessary controversy, and ultimately defies the very principles that chiropractic was founded on. It is important to recognize that not every chiropractor is thoroughly trained in performing the Webster technique. This is why the ICPA offers extensive postgraduate coursework and awards qualified chiropractors a Certificate of Proficiency in the Webster technique. Only those doctors on the ICPA’s directory maintain recognized certification status for the Webster protocol, as they receive continuing education and updates regarding this technique.

Children and Vegetables

By John Marc, Pathways Contributor

We all know it’s important to maintain healthy nutrition and we honor this knowledge by telling our loved ones why we should eat more vegetables. Unfortunately, much of this information doesn’t stick. Often, it only aggravates the children who see it as some sort of cosmic injustice taking place:”Why do we have to eat VEGETABLES, of all things, to be healthy?” In all honestly, our own opinion about the matter is usually no different. This makes the injunction for more vegetables even less convincing.

First, we must learn to love eating vegetables.

This will enhance our talent for cooking vegetables. More importantly, loving vegetables dissolves our desire to lecture our children about them. As we begin to practice what we preach with an authentic love of doing it, we will impress our children in lasting ways.

He or she who loves vegetables eats them for breakfast!

This is remarkably simple and it brings vegetables to a whole new level of prominence in your life. There’s something magical about breakfast. It’s wrapped with awesome sensations like the rising sun, birds signing, and the smell of coffee. With this comes a natural rise in serotonin levels and many other endocrine hormones that give us positive feelings. Children are most attuned to this natural, morning high. Coupling the morning time with vegetables which could benefit from these positive associations just makes perfect sense! Furthermore, having just woken from a night-long fast, breakfast time offers us a unique opportunity to fall in love with any food that we choose to eat, not just bacon or French toast.

Lastly, relax and enjoy your child’s defiance – it’s a sign of good health!

One thing is for certain. Children are born into this world with a vitality level that few adults can remember. Adults want children to be healthy and strong, but they already are these things!

If adults were endowed with a childlike vitality, two things would probably happen:
1) They would be unceremoniously plunged into the present moment and begin to live a more vibrant life.
2) They would quickly take on that characteristic of children which abandons all fear for future health concerns. Just imagine the freedom!

The bottom line is that we can regain the freedom and vitality of our childhood. This vitality IS achievable through the consumption of copious amounts of cooked vegetables. And our children, surrounded by the love of nutrition, will learn to enjoy vegetables as a part of life, which will ensure that they maintain their vitality into adolescence and adulthood.

Why Chiropractic Care is Being Recommended for Ear Infections

By Janaiah von Hassel

I was recently on a Mom forum where a distraught mother complained about her two-year-old’s chronic ear infections. She
was tortured over the notion of giving her daughter yet another antibiotic which seemed to do nothing but guarantee a return
of the ear infection.

This Mom’s concerns weren’t unfounded

For decades, the evidence-based research about antibiotics has shown that not
only are they ineffective at treating ear infections, but they will actually lead to repeated ear infections in the future. In 2004 the American Academy of Pediatrics began its “watch and wait” approach to treating ear infections with antibiotics.
I was thrilled to read in the comments, under this mother’s post, that many other mothers were suggesting chiropractic care
citing their positive experiences.

One Mom reported “My children used to be on antibiotics more than they were off them due
to ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat etc. Once we began chiropractic care we said goodbye to all that drama.”
Chiropractors will tell you that they don’t treat ear infections. So how is it that so many parents report that their children under chiropractic care no longer suffer from ear infections? Among many pediatricians who seek safer options for children, well-renowned Dr. Sears recently said that he encourages chiropractic care to avoid the onset of ear infections.

Why? Because misalignment of the spinal bones can cause undue pulling on the child’s neck muscles creating tension to
their eustachian tubes. The subsequent dysfunction of these tubes to drain lymphatic fluid causes an increased risk of
infection. The chiropractic adjustment aims to reduce the tension of misalignments all throughout the body–restoring normal
physiology.

The Purpose of the Adjustment

In an article in Pathways to Family Wellness Magazine, “Chiropractic and Ear Infections: What We Offer Makes a Difference,
the author explains, “The purpose of chiropractic care is not the treatment of conditions or diseases; rather, it is the
restoration of normal body function. Chiropractors work with the nervous system via gentle spinal adjustments to reduce
stress related interferences to the nervous system thereby enhancing overall body function. All systems of the body—
muscular, glandular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, eliminatory, hormonal and immunological—depend on the optimal
functioning of the nervous system. With chiropractic, we focus on improving the nervous system to enhance all the body’s
systems.”

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat the symptom or infection. They do not suppress or mask the symptom, but instead they
allow the body to regain its natural state of function and health. Infections indicate an overloaded immune system. The best
course of action is to support the body in regaining its balanced immune system. Treating the ear infection with antibiotics
causes an additional overload to the immune system and can actually create greater havoc, leading to the susceptibility of
repeated infections.

The science of physiology has made clear that the body is an intricate ecosystem

A vigorous disruption to any of the body’s systems cannot support long-lasting health, nor does it honor the balance of health within. Chiropractic care is all about the restoration of normal physiological balance. With this balance a child’s immune system will function more efficiently.
While you follow the evidence based recommendations to “watch and wait” follow the scientific recommendations set by
normal physiology and support your child’s immunity with safe, gentle and effective chiropractic adjustments.

“Thanks Mom!” We Love You!

By Judy Campanale, DC, ACP, FCSC (hon)

May is the month we celebrate Mom. We try to show them how thankful we are for all they do and all they are. Moms ARE truly extraordinary and their story is among the most incredible examples of how amazing our bodies really are!

First, babies weigh anywhere from 5 to 10 pounds at birth. Imagine yourself walking around with a gallon of milk (about 8 pounds) everywhere you go for even a single day let alone weeks on end. And most moms gain additional weight to support the baby growing inside them which makes getting around all the harder.

Beyond the sheer physical feat of lugging around in your belly a growing baby, think about the fact that each of our moms were growing us inside them for about 9 months—some a little more some a little less. That’s almost an entire school year! It’s fascinating though, that at present, none of us could live where we spent our first 9 months, and not just because we are too big to fit, but because we need air and light, and in our Moms’ bellies we were basically under water in the dark. So that means you would have to hold your breath for 9 months!!! The average person can’t hold their breath for more than maybe a minute or so.

Finally and maybe most amazing of all is how one person can become two people!!! Actually you started as two separate cells, one from your mom and one from your dad. Those two cells got together and grew into the incredible, amazing organism that is you. An organism that is so complex and so sophisticated that even the most brilliant minds on the planet don’t have it figured out! But your mom’s body knew and that is truly astonishing!

When those two cells first came together they divided and grew. And as they began to become you, the first “Thanks Mom!” system to develop was your nerve system. From that very early time, your nerve system directed your growth and development, including ten other different systems, dozens of different organs, 206 bones, 640 muscles and 37.2 trillion cells!!!

It’s important to know that even after you are born your nerve system continues to direct and organize your whole body’s function and performance. By connecting your brain to your body your nerve system is not only able to communicate about what is going on in your body but it is also able to provide the information required for your body to adapt and perform at its best.

That’s why it is so important to see your family’s chiropractor regularly. He or she will make sure that there is nothing interfering with your nerve system so you can continue to grow into the amazing person you were meant to be. Maybe your mom already takes you to the chiropractor. Well then that’s just another reason to thank her and show her some love on Mother’s Day and everyday. Thanks Mom!

The Wholeness of Chiropractic

-Simon Senzon, D.C.

When you read about chiropractic in the popular press or watch something about chiropractic on television it rarely captures the full picture. Chiropractic has been around for so many decades that not everyone knows there are many approaches, methods, and viewpoints about it.

One of the most compelling and fascinating ideas in chiropractic is wholeness. Since the earliest days of chiropractic this idea has included the fact that the central nervous system governs the body’s functions. Only in recent years however, has this idea been more completely understood.

The nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord is interconnected. When one part of it is affected, all of it is affected. This is a deep and profound wholeness.

The primary concern of a chiropractic analysis is to determine if there is a problem with the nervous system. More specifically, to determine if an area of the spine is interfering with the proper function of the nerves. This is more common than most people realize because it is structural, foundational, and often very subtle.

Chiropractors have been developing methods and techniques to analyze the spine and nervous system for over 120 years. Many of these methods emphasize the wholeness of the nervous system. This is important to understand. A gentle chiropractic adjustment at one area of the spine could affect any part of the nervous system that is not functioning properly.

Light Touch Adjustment

Ever since the 1930s, chiropractors developed what used to be called “reflex techniques.” These techniques usually involve an exam of the spine and body and then a light touch or gentle chiropractic adjustment at one of the ends of the spine. Other approaches to chiropractic include more structural adjustments. All of these approaches have developed considerably in the last 80 years.

Whether your chiropractor uses a “light approach” or a more “structural approach,” they are affecting the wholeness of the nervous system. When any part of the nervous system is able to function better and without interference then you function better.

Spring: Time to Thaw Your Frozen Shoulder

Ah, Spring! It seems like only yesterday that I was up at Whistler Blackcomb, on 7th Heaven skiing on a seemingly limitless blanket of powder.  Actually that was yesterday.  But farther down the mountain, spring has sprung, and spring-skiing aside, it is time for our condition of the week: Frozen Shoulder.

Frozen Shoulder

You start off with some stiffness and soreness in your shoulder, and gradually it gets to the point where you can barely lift or move your arm.  Now you have frozen shoulder.  It is common in jobs with repetitive movements (like cashiers).

What should you do?

Chiropractic and Laser help to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.  Research has shown, and what I have found in practice, is that using chiropractic care to remove interference in the nerves (at the skull and neck) reduces tension in the muscles and improves coordination.  Laser therapy to the neck and shoulder decreases pain and helps the nerves and muscles heal.

We can work on the shoulder with Active Release Techniques and Graston Technique.  These are specialized techniques that isolate the structures and improve texture and fluidity of movement.

Can I Take Anything?

I recommend an amazing supplement called Procosa by USANA.  It is available on my online shop, or from any USANA associate that you happen to know.  I recommend it not only if you have frozen shoulder, but really for anybody over forty years old who wants to keep their joints healthy.   It also has some stuff in it that helps with inflammation.  I take it every day, so maybe you should too.

Some people like to take things like Advil, an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).  You can do that, if you enjoy side-effects like gastrointestinal bleeding.  Over 19,000 people die every year from taking them.  It’s totally up to you.

Childhood Sport Injuries

Childhood Sport Injuries

Childhood sport injuries are an epidemic, and it shouldn’t be a surprise.

I only have to look as far as my kids’ weekly schedule.  Not only do they have gym class and running at school, there is also soccer, baseball, skiing, swimming, martial arts, hockey, gymnastics, dance class… not to mention the the mayhem of the playground and our back yard trampoline.

The number one lesson for any young athlete should be learning how to take care of their body, and listen to their body.  I mean, isn’t that the reason you want them to be active in the first place?

But It’s Good To Be Active Right?

Encouraging your kids to be active is great, but that does not preclude the responsibility to teach them how to rest when necessary, how to put the needs of their body at a high priority, and the benefits of getting their spine and nervous system checked.

Chiropractic care improves the function of the nervous system, allowing your child to have better coordination and performance, and prevents injury.

Best of all, like playing sports, kids also love to get checked a by the chiropractor.

How Gentle Can You Be?

When checking small children, I use what is called “eyeball” pressure.  This is the amount of pressure that you would use to press on your eyeball comfortably (with the eyelid closed).  If you close your eyes right now and press on your eye with your thumb, you will see how gentle that actually is.

What Are the Most Common Symptoms?

Changes to the spine and posture can cause interference to the nervous system and result in a number of different symptoms.

  • headaches
  • shoulder pain
  • ankle and foot pain
  • foot pronation (yes we do kids orthotics)
  • knee pain
  • hip pain
  • wrist pain
  • neck pain
  • upper, lower, or mid back pain

Wellness After Whiplash: 3 Steps

So you are driving home from the airport after a nice vacation with your family in Disneyland. They are asleep in the back seat and WHAM, you get rear-ended by some clown in a pickup truck.

At least, that’s what happened to me last August. And like me, you may have Whiplash.

The symptoms may start right away, or they can start unto a week later. Here are a few things to remember:

1: Get Chiropractic Care Right Away

It may seem logical to wait (it is even a common mistake MD’s make) a while for things to “settle down.” Research has shown, and we have seen in our office that the best results occur if chiropractic care is started immediately.

2: Take Responsibility!

Someone else may be responsible for injuring you. They are not responsible for getting you better. You have to realize that the most important thing is to take responsibility so you and your family get better. Worry about the other guy paying later.

3: Transition to the Wellness Lifestyle

People who continue chiropractic care every 2 weeks continue to improve over the next year, but 80% of those who discontinue care after their injury suffer a relapse.

Schedule now.

If you are an active patient you can refer any friend or family member who is new to our office for a free initial examination and report of findings.

This is only this month.  Take advantage of it while you can!

Since moving, our office has been in a growth phase.  We have never had the capacity to see so many people, and we want to help you and your friends and family first, before we start advertising elsewhere.

If you have a friend or family member who would love to get checked for free, then email us at [email protected], or use the “Book an Appointment” button.

We have already had a boat-load of people take advantage of this, and can’t wait to serve the people you care about.

Our Health is Connected to Our Family & Loved Ones

You know I was just at Port Moody City Hall today. I was telling the lady at the counter how my mother would come to watch me play hockey.  I would occasionally look up at my mom after delivering a big hit.  She looked shocked and scared.  The lady at the counter said knowingly “she felt the pain for you.”

This reminded me of something I read last year.  Did you know that in one study, moms felt their back pain improve after a chiropractor checked their small child?  It kinda makes sense doesn’t it?  We do feel our family’s pain.  Your health can cause a ripple effect that changes the health of the people close to you.

That is why so many chiropractors tout the benefits of checking the whole family.  If one of you is succumbing to the effects of stress, then that person affects everybody.

Friends and Family Month is a great opportunity for you to get back on track with regular chiropractic care and invest in great health for you and your loved ones.

The A.R.T. of Making Piriformis Syndrome Less of a Pain In The Butt.

Sometimes it starts gradually, sometimes suddenly. You describe a pain in your “hip”, “butt” “low back.”  The pain radiates all around the front and back of your hip, and sometimes it tingles down the leg.   Many people call it “sciatica.” It is often affectionately called “Piriformis Syndrome,” after a single tiny muscle in the butt that sometimes pinches the sciatic nerve.

My colleague Clayton Roach ingeniously describes piriformis syndrome as “the pain you can’t explain.”. Despite it’s mysterious demeanour, it is one of the most common issues I see in practice. It is common because many of us exercise, then we sit to much.  The pressure of sitting decreases oxygen flow in the muscles, making them less likely to heal.

Who Gets Piriformis Syndrome?

If you are a hiker, cyclist, runner or weight lifter who also drives or sits at a desk all day, you are a prime candidate for this.

Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.)

ART is a system of diagnosis and treatment that isolates structures, improves fluidity of movement, and improves texture.  An ART practitioner will  be able to identify not only the affected muscles (piriformis, gluteus medium/maximus, gamelli, etc), but provide immediate treatment to fix the problem, sometimes permanently.

An ART practitioner certified in Nerve Entrapment will also be able to recognize non-piriformis related entrapment.  Muscles other than the piriformis can also entrap the sciatic nerve.

Get Adjusted!

Lastly, remember that the nervous system is the master controller of your body.  Chiropractic care removes interference in the nervous system, and enhances your posture, muscle coordination and healing

Laser Therapy

We offer class 4 laser therapy to accelerate the healing process and decrease pain and inflammation.  It is a great addition that gets you back to normal as quickly as possible.

What To Do?

If you are ready to take action, for you or someone you love, schedule an initial visit with our office.  We really look forward to guiding you toward greater health and wellness with chiropractic care.
